knitting

to quote my sweet mama, "i'm so tickled!"

i have attempted to teach both of my kids to knit and/or finger knit, and use one of those mushroom thingys, to no avail. not interested. i pretty much have had a knitting project in my hands since living in oregon, i think the chillier climate is more conducive to handling wool for more months. i am just guessing that seeing me constantly knitting, they've sort of picked up the rhythm of knitting, i felt that way about growing up with a constant knitter.

whatever it is, we sat down briefly one night last week and i showed them casting on and the knit stitch. and now they're both off and running! marley has decided that working toward a goal is more satisfying, which i think jasper will be doing soon as well.

marley told me that she is very inspired by her friend eleanor who knits her own dolls and accessories, and she's just a few years older than marley. i think jasper feels very inspired by our adult male friend ladd who recently declared a new signature look for himself, by wearing a handmade, by him, item every day, knitting being one of his crafts of choice.

they each purchased their own bamboo knitting needles, look at those old aluminum honkers jasper is trying to knit with above! we used melanie falick's book kid's knitting. i love this book and found her illustrations a great way to relearn knitting after 20 years. i have spoken to our local waldorf handwork teacher, and this is her book of choice as well.

i am excited for the kids, making something with your own two hands is so satisfying !

Love this post! I will be sure to show it to Ladd. He will be thrilled you mentioned him and his knitting skills! The kids really look like they have the hang of it. xoxo
